Boise is located on the Boise River in southwestern Idaho, 41 miles (66 km) east of the Oregon border and 110 miles (177 km) north of the Nevada border. This State Capitol’s downtown area's elevation is 2,704 feet (824 m) above sea level. Its estimated population in 2018 was 228,790. Boise is the State’s most populous city and the county seat of Ada County.
Boise has never missed a ranking the Top 100 Best Live list, not to mention numerous other Livability rankings. Boise helps set the cultural tone of the state, offering residents and visitors a rich collection of amenities from parks and restaurants to museums and music venues.
Boise State University drives the local and state economy, notwithstanding large corporations e.g., Micron Technology, HP, St. Luke’s & St. Alphonsus Health Systems, Albertsons, Winco Foods, IdaCorp, Boise Cascade, Bogus Basin Ski Resort and J.R. Simplot Company. While most of the city lies on a broad flat plain, a stretch of mountains to the northeast offers great neighborhoods as well as excellent hiking, snow-skiing, mountain biking and camping opportunities.
The downtown area has a variety of shops, top-tier hotels, dining choices and is “Bike Friendly”. Centrally, 8th Street contains a pedestrian zone with sidewalk cafes and restaurants. The neighborhood has many local restaurants, bars and boutiques and supports a vibrant nightlife. The area also contains the Basque Block, which showcases Boise's Basque heritage.
Downtown Boise's main attractions include the Idaho State Capitol, the classic Egyptian Theatre, JUMP (Jack's Urban Meeting Place, a creative activity center with facilities for public meetings, workshops, and exhibition space), the Boise River Greenbelt, the Boise Centre Convention Center, the Boise Art Museum, Julia Davis & Ann Morrison Parks and Zoo Boise.
Boise encompasses numerous open spaces and a little bit of big city. It boasts almost non-existent crime, great schools, friendly people and easy access to countless outdoor activities.
